Volunteer Opportunities with MPE PTA

This is a list of our main volunteer roles/committees and associated duties. The positions are listed under the responsible board member. If the detailed duties seem overwhelming for a position you are interested in, email the board member (or the specific coordinator) to see how these duties can be shared with other volunteers. Even a small amount of participation in one of these positions is greatly appreciated (eg. for movie night, a volunteer may only wish to purchase the concession snacks and bring them to the school).

To sign up for a volunteer position, you can either email the responsible party directly as described below or you can log onto your PTA account and complete the "2021-2022 Volunteer Opportunities" form which will open in early July.

Odyssey of the Mind - Co-Chair/Coordinator-in-training

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Click here for more details about the competition.

Eric Hall is our Odyssey of the Mind coordinator for the 2021-2022 school year and is looking to work with someone this year that can share some of the duties but also be trained to take over as coordinator for future years. He can be reached at mpeom@millsparkpta.com.

Volunteers are needed to plan and coordinate all activities as per NCPTA guidelines for this program (e.g., publicity, art preparation/drop off/pick up, judging, small awards ceremony/celebration, and sending winning entries to the county competition.) Registration is done early in the academic year.

Other volunteer duties include publicizing the event, organizing running bibs, necklace beads, running logs, and t-shirts before the final run event.

Walk-To-School Day - Coordinator, General Volunteers

In early October, one of the PTA health and wellness initiatives includes a day where all students can walk to school together starting from a couple of different locations in the neighborhood. Volunteers are needed to create a flyer and signs, decorate the sidewalks with encouraging messages, organize meeting spots for large groups to meet up and walk together. Volunteers can also work with local celebrities and law enforcement to manage crowds, crosswalks, and generate excitement for participation.

Operation Gratitude - Coordinator and/or General Volunteers

Volunteer duties include coordinating with local dental offices or other organizations for collection of leftover Halloween candy, organizing candy drive at the school and delivering to dentist/organization.

Cultural Arts Showcases - Coordinator-in-training

Do you have an interest in bringing the arts into school? This position is for you! Every year, MPE PTA books 3 to 5 cultural arts showcases for the school. The Cultural Arts coordinator attends an Arts Showcase, reviews available acts, books performances, and manages day-of activities. This year, you will be trained by our current coordinator, Eric Hall, to take over for the 2022-2023 school year.

In late September/early October, families enjoy a night outside behind MPE watching a movie on an inflatable big screen. Volunteers are needed to help organize the event (book movie, movie screen company and food trucks; make and distribute flyers; purchase concession snacks) and set up and run the concession stand on movie night.

Doughnuts With Grown-Ups - General Volunteers

During 2 or 3 mornings of our annual Scholastic Book Fair in October, parents are invited to enjoy a doughnut and coffee with their student in the cafeteria before browsing the book display in the Media Center. Staff/Teacher Appreciation Week - General Volunteers

This is the largest hospitality event of the school year. It is the week we express our gratitude and appreciation for our amazing staff. The exact dates will be determined during the winter; typically, this event is held in February or March. Traditionally, this week includes a different special event for the staff each day. In the past it has included 2 luncheons, 1 breakfast, staff gifts and a dessert day; our Hospitality team will organize the events and will need lots of volunteers to help pull it off. Spirit Wear

Our spirit wear coordinator, Tracey Strahl, will help order, stock and fill orders for MPE spirit wear. Volunteers may be needed at different events to help process sales.

Spirit Nights - Coordinator

Our spirit night coordinator books monthly spirit nights with local eateries, makes and distributes flyers. There are certain popular places we go to each year (eg. Andia's Homemade Ice Cream) - we already have great contacts for these. MPE families enjoy adding new restaurants to the roster.

Book Fair - General Volunteers

The two-week Scholastic Book Fair usually takes place in October. We need a new coordinator for this event. Volunteers are also needed to help set up and take down the book display in the media center and to help process sales.

In addition, sub-committee leads are needed in the following areas: Advertising and Sponsorship, Ticket Sales, Activities and Games, Food, Raffle Baskets, Silent Auction, Decorations and Volunteer Coordinator.

School Supplies/Edukits - Coordinator

Previously, we have used Edukits which provides parents a grade-specific kit of school supplies curated by MPE teachers. We were not able to have an Edukit option for parents this year because we didn't have a volunteer to fill this role. This role would be relevant in winter 2022 and be for the 2022-2023 academic year. Duties include coordinating with vendor regarding class supply lists, coordinating with Communications to get information to parents, receiving/organizing/distributing orders at Meet-The-Teacher.

The Nourishing Noggins program provides MPE students/families with bags of nutritious food to take home each weekend and boxes of food and hygiene items to take home over the winter and summer breaks.  We are looking for a co-chair!  The co-chair would help raise money for the charity and work closely with the school counselors to ensure the families get the weekly bags.  If you are interested, please contact Neema Patel at npatel1219@gmail.com.

Bulletin Board Decorator

Do you enjoy paper crafts? We would love to have a volunteer decorate and update our PTA bulletin board, just outside the PTA office, throughout the year. Email communications@millsparkpta.com if you are interested in this position.
